New to Singapore, or building your life here for the long term? Moving to a new country often means focusing on the immediate priorities - finding a home, settling into work and navigating healthcare. But one important question may easily be overlooked: if something happens to you, would your loved ones and financial commitments be adequately protected in Singapore?
As a foreigner living and working in Singapore, your financial commitments, dependents and healthcare needs may be different from those in your home country. Your existing insurance overseas may also not provide the same level of protection for your life and healthcare needs here.
Whether you’re just starting out in Singapore or already firmly established, having the right insurance in place can help protect your income, your loved ones and the life you’re building while giving you greater confidence as you plan your future here.
One Place for Your Protection and Investment needs
As an expat or foreigner living in Singapore, you may have financial commitments and priorities that extend beyond Singapore - from protecting your loved ones and income to managing assets in different countries. This is why your financial plan should go beyond simply preparing for the unexpected. It should help you:
- Protect your income and loved ones if something unexpected happens.
- Prepare for critical illnesses and major health events with lump-sum protection.
- Access quality private medical care when you need it.
- Plan for your future and wealth transfer as your assets grow, both in Singapore and overseas.
What We Consider Essential Protection
Insurance needs vary from person to person. But if you are living and working in Singapore, there are three areas of protection we believe are worth considering as a starting point especially if you have not yet reviewed how well your existing coverage protects you here.
Our recommended insurance bundle is built around these three areas:
1. Term Life Cover
Term insurance provides a straightforward way to establish substantial life protection at a relatively affordable premium. Dependent on the policy, it can provide financial support to your loved ones in the event of death, terminal illness or total and permanent disability.
For foreigners and expats with financial commitments in Singapore or overseas, this can be particularly important if your family relies on your income.

2. Early Critical Illness (ECI) Rider
Life insurance isn't only about what happens after death. An Early Critical Illness (ECI) rider can provide a lump-sum payout upon diagnosis of specified critical illnesses, which may include early-, intermediate- and late-stage conditions, depending on the policy.
This can provide financial support if you need to take time away from work for treatment or recovery.
In Singapore, one way to obtain critical illness coverage is by adding an ECI rider to a term insurance plan. This allows a single policy to provide protection against death, terminal illness and total and permanent disability, while also providing coverage for specified critical illnesses.

3. Private Hospital Coverage
Healthcare costs can be significant, particularly if you prefer access to private hospitals and greater flexibility when seeking treatment in Singapore. Our recommended bundle therefore also includes private hospital coverage.
For foreigners and expats, having appropriate health insurance can be especially important, as your healthcare coverage may depend on factors such as your residency status, employer benefits and existing overseas arrangements.

There are two ways of getting this private hospital coverage:
- Singapore Integrated Shield Plans
- International Health Plans
The right option may depend on how long you expect to remain in Singapore, your healthcare preferences and whether you may relocate in the future.

Here’s What We Recommend
Insurance is often purchased one piece at a time, which can sometimes leave gaps in your overall protection. Our recommended bundle takes a more holistic approach by addressing three key areas of financial risk together.
To keep things simple and cost-efficient, we recommend structuring your core protection across two complementary policies:
Policy 1: Term Life Insurance + Early Critical Illness Rider
- S$1,000,000 Death, Terminal Illness, and Total Permanent Disability cover and,
- S$300,000 Early Critical Illness rider.
Policy 2: Comprehensive Private Hospital Coverage
- An Integrated Shield Plan for private hospital coverage in Singapore, or
- An International Health Plan, depending on your healthcare needs and relocation plans.
Do bear in mind that this recommended coverage amount is a starting point, not a ceiling. Depending on your income, dependents, existing coverage and personal circumstances, you may require higher coverage or additional protection, such as income protection for non-critical illness or injury.
