How Indonesians Can Start Investing in USD — Made Simple

FSM is the Business-to-Consumer (B2C) division of iFAST Corporation Ltd., an SGX-listed global digital banking and wealth management platform. Founded in 2000, our mission has always been to help investors around the world invest globally and profitably. Find out more about FSM Global here.

The rupiah has had a volatile year, and if you’ve noticed your imported goods getting pricier or your purchasing power quietly shrinking, you’re not imagining it. For investors with international expenses, long-term global goals or portfolios concentrated in rupiah, adding some USD exposure may provide useful currency diversification.

The US dollar is the world’s primary reserve currency, used in the majority of global trade and held by central banks worldwide, which means it tends to behave differently from emerging market currencies during periods of volatility.

The good news: USD investment in Indonesia doesn’t require a forex trading background, a large starting sum, or a degree in finance. Here are five straightforward ways to do it.

How you fund and use your account can depend on where you’re based:

Living or working in Singapore

Use a Singapore bank account to fund through FAST, PayNow or eGIRO, before converting or investing through the relevant currency account. FSM Global currently supports these local funding methods.

Based in Indonesia or another country

Account opening may still be available, but funding methods, bank charges, processing times, withdrawal arrangements and product availability may differ. FSM Global notes that overseas remittances can involve telegraphic-transfer charges and that international withdrawals are currently available in USD or SGD.

1. Let Auto-Sweep Do the Work

For anyone who wants their USD to do something productive without actively managing it, this is the entry point. Once your USD is in your account, FSM Global’s Auto-Sweep automatically channels excess cash into a higher-yielding option. No manual decisions, no timing required.

It invests into cash, money market funds, and short-duration bond funds on a discretionary basis, generating a higher indicative yield than the cash account alone. And when you’re ready to deploy that cash into other investments, there’s no lag time. It’s as close to “set it and forget it” as USD investment gets.

2. Open a Multi-Currency Account

Quietly underpinning the other options is a multi-currency account. It lets you hold US dollars, alongside other major currencies such as GBP, EUR, HKD and SGD, all in one FSM Global account. From there, you can trade US stocks and ETFs for a more active approach, or invest in USD bonds for something more conservative.

FSM Global’s Multi-Currency Cash Account gives you access to 12 major currencies, with instant FX conversion and interest accrued daily. So even here, your money isn’t just sitting there.

3. Start a Regular Savings Plan for US ETFs

You don’t need a lump sum to invest in USD through US ETFs. FSM Global’s ETF Regular Savings Plan (RSP) lets you invest a fixed amount on a recurring basis, automatically deducted from your USD Cash Account each month. It’s built on Dollar Cost Averaging: a strategy that removes the pressure of timing the market by investing consistently over time regardless of highs and lows.

ETF RSP comes with 0% processing fees, making it one of the most cost-efficient ways for Indonesians to build a US ETF portfolio gradually.

4. Invest in USD Bonds

Bonds have long carried a reputation for being the domain of institutions and high-net-worth investors. USD bonds, including US Treasuries backed by the US government, can be a natural next step for anyone who’s gotten comfortable with the earlier ways and wants to put more of their USD investment to work with a clearer return expectation. Bonds may offer scheduled coupon payments and return of principal at maturity, subject to the issuer meeting its obligations. Their market value may fluctuate, particularly if they are sold before maturity.

Bondsupermart Live makes the process more transparent than traditional bond investing, with live pricing and real-time trading. Do note the eligibility rules: Accredited Investors can access bond denominations below S$200,000 through Bondsupermart Live, while non-accredited investors generally need to meet the standard minimum denomination and an investment value of at least S$200,000 (or the foreign-currency equivalent).

5. Trade US Stocks and ETFs

For those ready to take a more active step, direct access to US equity markets opens the door to investing in some of the world’s most recognisable companies: Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, and many more.

ETFs are worth highlighting here as a way to diversify across many companies at once without needing to pick individual stocks, lowering the complexity while maintaining broad exposure. FSM Global offers access to NASDAQ, NYSE, AMEX, and BATS — with no platform fee. US ETF trades also come with a flat fee of just USD 3.80, regardless of your investment amount.

Where to Start

You don’t need to work through all five ways at once. Pick one entry point, try it, and move up when it feels right. USD investment doesn’t have to be complicated. And with the right platform, it isn’t.
